Medicare can look different for everyone. Where you live, the doctors and hospitals you use, how often you travel, and the way you prefer to manage your healthcare costs can all influence which Medicare coverage makes sense for you.
For people living throughout Northwest Michigan, those considerations can be especially important. The region includes year-round residents, retirees who have made Northern Michigan home, seasonal residents, and people who spend part of the year traveling or living outside the state. Some people may value the flexibility of Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement, while others may prefer the benefits and structure of a Medicare Advantage plan.
At Maple Valley Insurance Group, we help Medicare beneficiaries throughout Northwest Michigan compare their options and understand the differences between Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement insurance, prescription drug coverage, and other Medicare-related plans. Our goal isn’t to steer everyone toward the same type of coverage. It’s to help you find an option that fits your healthcare needs, budget, doctors, and the way you live.
Whether you live in the Traverse City area, the Leelanau Peninsula, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, or another Northwest Michigan community, we’re available to help you make sense of your Medicare choices — locally or by phone and online.
Medicare Is Different for Everyone
Choosing Medicare coverage involves more than simply comparing premium quotes. The coverage you choose can affect which doctors and hospitals you can use, what you pay when you receive care, how prescriptions are covered, and how much flexibility you have when your healthcare needs change.
That’s why we believe the conversation should start with what matters to you, rather than with a particular insurance company’s plan. Do you want to keep specific doctors? Is keeping your monthly premium as low as possible important? Do you travel frequently? Would you rather have predictable costs when you receive healthcare?
Those questions can help narrow down which Medicare options are worth a closer look.
Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is very popular in Michigan, and there are good reasons for that. Many plans have low or even $0 monthly premiums beyond the Medicare Part B premium, and they often include prescription drug coverage along with benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs.
For many people who get most of their healthcare close to home, Medicare Advantage can be a very good fit. The important thing is understanding how the particular plan works. Networks, costs, benefits, and rules can vary from one plan to another, so it’s important to look beyond the monthly premium.
Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement
Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works differently. Original Medicare is your primary coverage, and the Supplement helps pay some of the costs that Medicare doesn’t pay.
One of the biggest reasons people choose this approach is flexibility. You’re not choosing a Medicare Advantage network. If a doctor or hospital accepts Medicare, you can generally receive your Medicare-covered care there. That can be especially important if you travel, spend part of the year somewhere else, or simply want more freedom in choosing where you receive care.
The trade-off is cost. A Medicare Supplement has a monthly premium, and you’ll generally need separate prescription drug coverage through Part D. You may also want separate dental, vision, and hearing coverage. You’re paying more each month in exchange for a different approach to managing your healthcare costs and greater flexibility in where you receive care.
There Are Trade-Offs With Both
Neither option is automatically better. Medicare Advantage can be an excellent choice when its network, benefits, costs, and approach to managing your healthcare fit what you’re looking for. For someone who values lower monthly costs and is comfortable with the plan’s network, it can make a lot of sense.
For people who put a high value on flexibility, Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement can be a very attractive alternative. In our experience, many of the people we work with who value that freedom feel that the higher monthly cost is worth it.
But popularity doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best choice for you. The right decision comes down to what matters most to you, what you’re comfortable spending, the doctors you want to keep, and how you want to use your Medicare.
Your Doctors and Hospitals Matter
When you’re choosing Medicare coverage, don’t overlook the doctors and hospitals you already use. Keeping the healthcare providers you trust can be just as important as the premium you pay each month.
This can be especially important if you’re considering Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage plans generally have networks of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers. Those networks can be different from one plan to another, so it’s worth checking to make sure the providers you want are available through the plan you’re considering.
Northwest Michigan has a strong regional healthcare system, with Munson Healthcare and its network of hospitals and providers serving communities throughout Northern Michigan. For many people in the Traverse City area and surrounding communities, knowing how their Medicare plan works with the healthcare providers they already use is an important part of the decision.
And networks can change. A doctor or healthcare system that participates in a plan today may not necessarily participate in the same plan in the future. That’s one reason we recommend looking beyond the monthly premium when comparing Medicare Advantage plans.
Medicare and Travel in Northwest Michigan
For some people in Northwest Michigan, healthcare doesn’t stop at the Michigan state line. You may spend part of the year in another state, travel frequently to visit family, or simply want the freedom to receive care when you’re away from home.
That’s something worth thinking about when you compare Medicare plans. A Medicare Advantage plan may work very well for someone whose healthcare is primarily centered around their local area, but traveling outside that area can make understanding the plan’s network and out-of-area coverage particularly important.
Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement can offer a different kind of flexibility because you aren’t relying on a Medicare Advantage network. That can be appealing to people who travel regularly or spend part of the year away from Michigan.
Of course, travel is only one consideration. The cost of coverage, your doctors, your healthcare needs, and the way you prefer to manage your healthcare costs all matter too.

If you’d like a broader look at Medicare options throughout the state, you can also explore our guide to Medicare Insurance and Agents in Michigan.
Some people prefer to meet with an agent in person, while others find that a phone or online appointment is easier. We can work with you either way, depending on where you live and what works best for you.
Traverse City and the Surrounding Area
Traverse City is the largest population center in Northwest Michigan and serves as an important healthcare and commercial center for communities throughout the region. Leelanau County and the Leelanau Peninsula
Medicare beneficiaries throughout Leelanau County and communities on the Leelanau Peninsula have their own considerations when choosing coverage. Medicare Help That Fits the Way You Live
We don’t believe you should have to become a Medicare expert just to make a good decision about your coverage. Our job is to listen to what you’re looking for, explain the options in plain English, and help you understand the trade-offs.
Sometimes that means looking closely at Medicare Advantage plans available in your area. Other times, Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement may be worth a closer look. There are also situations where the best answer is simply to keep the coverage you already have.
We’re independent, so we’re not tied to one Medicare plan or one insurance company. That allows us to look at the choices available to you and explain the differences without assuming that the same solution works for everyone.
Whether you’re new to Medicare or have had Medicare for years, sometimes the most useful thing is simply having a conversation with someone who knows the subject and will take the time to answer your questions.
